Using waterways to move goods, aid industry or simply for transportation has been done for centuries. But the excellent canals and ports used today didn’t always exist, and sometimes creating them took generations. So it is with the Lachine Canal in Montreal.

One area of this complex of islands in Quebec contain a natural feature called the Lachine Rapids. Like most rapids, they can be fun for adventurers, but they’re a real problem for commercial activity. As early as 1689, less than 50 years after the city’s founding, enterprising locals tried to forge a canal around them. But, owing to government resistance, lack of funds and absence of engineering knowledge it took over a hundred years to become a reality.

But in 1825, the Lachine Canal did finally open, linking Montreal’s harbor to the Ottawa River. Down the canal moved ships large and small bringing goods, transporting people and providing the area with a much needed efficient waterway. It served that purpose for over 100 years, until finally in 1959 it was obsoleted by the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Not surprisingly, the canal and surrounding area then took a turn for the worse, becoming run down and useless. But in 1988, the federal government began efforts to revitalize Lachine Canal, planting trees and creating a small, thin park along its edge. Today, those efforts have blossomed into one of Montreal’s most popular tourist attractions.

Lachine Canal now offers everything from a leisurely walk amid beautiful scenery to kayaking and boat rides and other water-related fun things to do. Private boat owners can take pleasure craft down the canal. Commercial tourist companies offer tours that provide historical overviews of the many old factories that dot the shore.

There are even upscale condos one can buy to enjoy the view. Part of the condos is an existing 150-year old historic tower that was once used to manufacture bullets. Molten lead droplets were let go from the top, forming spheres under gravity and hardening in the cool water 100 feet below.

Since 2002, the canal area has offered visitors a view into Montreal’s fascinating past. The Fur Trade at Lachine is a National Historic site that provides insight into the active exchange that took place along its shores more than two hundred years ago. Part of the tour provides a look at stone warehouses of the Hudson Bay company and others dating from the early 19th century. Not far away there are beautiful old railway bridges, tunnels and pedestrian bridges to explore.

The park area is also an active archaeological site with scientists and interested parties working to uncover aspects of Quebec’s past. Part of the effort involves opening up the huge triangular entrance to the once-active locks that allowed large cargo ships to reach the area.

Kayaking is a popular activity, too. Visitors can join two to six man kayak teams and paddle their way down the canal for a trip that can go on for hours. Many other companies offer two hour and longer relaxing cruises. They sail up and down the canal on comfortable ships along the 14km (8mi) stretch from Old Port to Lake Saint-Louis.

But one of the most pleasant and popular things to do at Lachine Canal is simply take a bicycle tour down the shore and enjoy all the great scenery, snapping a few photos. It isn’t hard to imagine what it looked like 200 years ago, since much of the area is relatively unchanged.

The canal entrance and tours are near Atwater Market in Old Port, with easy access to public transportation. Just take the Metro (Montreal’s subway) to Square Victoria.

The causes of headaches aren’t known with certainty in any case. But given that migraines and tension headaches – by far the most common types – occur much more frequently in women, it’s reasonable to suppose that hormones play a role. Those hormones are undergoing rapid change in a pregnant woman so it shouldn’t be surprising that headaches are a common occurrence during that time.

As those hormonal changes smooth out during the second and third trimesters, as the body adjusts, headaches typically become less frequent and intense. Fortunately, it isn’t necessary to passively accept headache pain at any time. There are things that expectant mothers can do during the entire pregnancy to minimize discomfort.

Stress is a common contributor or trigger for headaches, and pregnancy can certainly be stressful. Large-scale, long-term lifestyle changes are happening and the future will hold even more. Meditation techniques and gentle exercise can help reduce the odds of getting stressed, and minimize the severity when it happens.

Proper rest is essential. One common trigger for both migraines and ordinary headaches is lack of sleep. Fatigue ups the odds of getting a headache and increases its intensity when it starts. But not only the amount is important, regularity is equally healthy. If your body naturally feels drowsy in the afternoon, take a short nap. But take care not to sleep so long during the day that a complete night’s sleep becomes difficult to maintain.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause damage to the fetus, though controversy remains about the amount. As with any chemical, dosage is important and alcohol is no different. However, it’s unclear how much is too much – and the amount varies from person to person, of course.

Red wine in particular is a common trigger for headaches for those who are sensitive, and the degree of sensitivity can change during pregnancy. It isn’t necessary to have a hangover to produce an alcohol-related headache. Each individual will have to set his or her own limit, but doing without is probably the safest bet for anyone.

Caffeine consumption, both tea and coffee, should be curtailed. Many women today find that double-strength latte in the morning to be the perfect pick-me-up at the start of a busy day. Best to order the regular for a few months.

Ironically, certain headache medications (Excedrin, for example) contain caffeine. A small amount may actually be helpful. But read the label on any medications taken. It’s easy to overdose and excess caffeine is a common trigger for headaches. Instantly eliminating all caffeine can also be problematic, however. Taper off gently.

Acetaminophen is generally considered safe for pregnant women. But aspirin and ibuprofen are to be avoided. Any medication you consider should be discussed with your physician, particularly if you suffer from migraines.

Cold or hot compresses on the head and neck, a quiet room, a gentle massage and other non-drug treatments can help substitute for pharmacological approaches.

Fall and Spring in some areas are the best time of year to go to a car show. The weather is not to hot or to cold. In some part of the country late summer and late winter are the best. If the car show is indoors the time of year is not as important. You may still want to go when the weather is easy to navigate.

Most clubs will organize their events in the summer and spring as most areas in the US have good weather during this time of year. It is difficult to have a good turn out in the winter when weather can change quickly. The point of most car shows is to raise money for the club sponsoring it. Start investigating the car show calendars in advance so you can plan which event you want to attend.

The late spring and start of summer are the best time in most states. The weather can be counted on to be descent. In the late Spring and early Summer you will not need a jacket in many areas. The weather is still cool but warm enough. Regardless of the time of year make sure to dress correctly.

In the summer months you may want to wear shorts and short sleeve shirts. If the event is outside make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat. A lightweight jacket may be needed for spring events as it can become cool quickly. In the winter heavy jackets may be needed in some areas unless the event is held indoors. By planning ahead and checking the weather you can ensure your comfort during a show.

When taking children to a car show plan carefully the time you wise to go. Some children do better in the morning and others do better in the afternoon. Evening for some children are not good times. They are tired from they day and need dinner and quite time before bed. Right after lunch can be the best time for some children. They will have had lunch and are less likely to be any trouble.

The evening time may be the best time to go to a show if you are with adults only. You can avoid heavy crowds. More people will attend during the afternoon than any other time. Attending a car show will depend greatly on your schedule and when the time is best for you.

After investigating the weather and checking your schedule you should be able to fit the trip to the show in easily.

If the weather is going to be unpredictable, plan for any contingency.

Many things about watching babies hasn’t changed for thousands of years. But, happily, technology has improved one aspect dramatically. Baby monitors allow for remote viewing and listening that provides security and safety for the child and peace of mind for parents.

Not surprisingly, since consumer electronics has developed to such an extent over the past 10-20 years, baby monitors are now equally sophisticated. Many have become a combination of TV/Security camera, microphone and speaker, and computer all rolled into one.

Not only do they provide the basic audio and/or visual ability that is basic to any baby monitor, but with added motion sensors and other features they increase security and safety well beyond previous generations.

The most basic models offer only audio. They’re chiefly a microphone that transmits sound to a speaker in another room. But even these low-end types can make that much more convenient and useful than models of the past. The speaker, for example, no longer is just a cheap little box that sits on a table. It can be in the form of a cell-phone style unit that is easily carried on the belt or in a pocket.

More expensive but more functional models add a visual feature. The camera is focused on the baby’s room or bed. The receiving unit, here too, can be of one of two basic types. The less expensive models feature a small TV-style receiver that can be conveniently set on a kitchen counter or living room table. Others are a mobile monitor the size of a cell phone LCD.

One other aspect that has improved enormously over the years is the range. Just as with portable phones, higher frequency baby monitors now allow the receiver and transmitter to be much further apart than in years past. No longer restricted to a few yards away within the home, the mobile receiver can be placed outside next to the pool or garden fence, in the garage… anywhere your phone will reach. Just as with phones, interference is virtually a thing of the past, too.

Still other models incorporate computer and Internet technology. These types can transmit audio-video to your computer in the home office or at work miles away. While not intended to allow parents to leave a baby unsupervised, it makes it easy for the parent at work to know instantly what the one at home sees or hears.

That feature also opens up the option of recording. Like any security camera-style device, much of that footage is going to be uninteresting. Thank heavens! But when something is amiss it can often be very helpful to be able to view the preceding and following minutes.

That provides the ultimate in security. But it’s also helpful in less extreme situations. Babies who become ill or injured can be better diagnosed when there’s a continual, real-time record of their actions. Multiple transmitting units can send data for more than one room to a single location, as well. That’s handy for keeping an ‘eye’ on more than one child at a time.

Still more sophisticated systems are available that sense the baby’s movements and provide alarms when they reach certain limits of distance or force. That’s highly useful for babies who are a little restless when sleeping or when you want to know they are waking up. It provides the next best thing to having a robot continually watch and report back on anything of interest or concern. Wait a few years and that may be an option, too!
